The Kalahari Research Centre (KRC)

Located at the Kuruman River Reserve in the Northern Cape of South Africa, the Kalahari Research Centre (KRC), is a leading research station for studies on diverse aspects of the Southern Kalahari.

Long-term research projects

Operating since 1993, the KRC serves as the field site of several long-term research projects including those of meerkats, mole rats, Cape ground squirrels, and pied babblers.

«I was overwhelmed by the discovery that amidst meerkats and other mongoose species, there was a symphony of communication, advancing our understanding of social mammals»

Marta Manser

Well equipped research and other facilities

The KRC offers unique opportunities for research, education and filming. This includes very well equipped research facilities, a molecular lab, sample storage, and comfortable living quarters for around fifty scientists, assistants or other visitors.

Studying with almost no limits

Beside long-term projects on mammals, birds and reptile species, there is a wide expanse of flora and fauna found at the KRC, providing almost no limits on what can be studied.

«The Kuruman River Reserve offers students and filmmakers alike an unparalleled environment to explore and experience this unique and lively habitat»

OF THE KALAHARI MEERKAT PROJECT (FKMP)

The Friends of the Kalahari Meerkat Project (FKMP) is a society of supporters of the project, grown from the interest gained surrounding documentaries and series such as Meerkat Manor. Members of the FKMP receive exclusive information on the meerkats in exchange for a membership fee or sponsorship which contributes to the running of the project. The FKMP is a large community of people with a shared interest in the meerkats and the discoveries made on their social behaviours.
