Common Barking Gecko (Ptenopus garrulus)

Overview

This research project focuses on the captivating calling behaviour of Barking Geckos and unlocks the secrets of sound localization.

About the project

In spring, male barking geckos emerge from their burrows and call around dawn and dusk, providing a unique opportunity to observe lizard sound localization. In 2019, we started a project to understand directional hearing in these animals, with video observations of their behavior and recording of their calls. We were able to use Auditory Brainstem Response recordings and laser vibrometry studies to measure the sensitivity of their hearing, and in future will return with microphone arrays and IR sensitive cameras to measure their orientation to speaker arrays and neighboring males.
